All employees need to acquire an up to date “Right to Work” documents issued by the Guernsey Housing Department to confirm that they are lawfully accommodated and allowed to work.

How to Live and Work in Guernsey?

People with a British or EEA passport can anytime move to Guernsey and reside in a single-occupancy Open Market property and work in Guernsey for as long as they wish or they can live in a multi-occupancy Open Market property and can live and work in Guernsey for a maximum period of 5 years then they must leave the Island.

Based on the field and level of role you seek, your employer may apply for a Guernsey Work Visa/Permit on your behalf. Work permit for Guernsey is issued by the Guernsey Border Agency for a maximum of 5 years. In addition to the Guernsey Work Permit, you will also need an Employment Permit from your employer, which is issued by the Guernsey Population Management Department.

The Housing Control Law categorizes Guernsey’s housing into two levels, one is the Open Market and the other one is the Local Market. The legislation also governs who can stay in all the accommodation on the Local Market and it also regulates who can live in certain types of housing on the Open Market.

  • Open to those individuals whose presence on Guernsey is required due to the "necessary" nature of their work.

  • Anyone can occupy Open Market ‘Part A’ private House(s) & Apartment(s);
  • Open to non-qualified residents, typically those who are unable to live on a Local Market license;
  • As a general view, Open Market Accommodation is considered more expensive than Local Market Accommodation.
