Croatia Resident Permit

Croatia Residence Permit Registration

Before entering Croatia, you must register with the local police irrespective of the visa or permit or travel document you possess. Foreign visitors on a Croatia short-term visa need to process the local registration within 48 hours. Those who already have the right to live in Croatia, e.g. via a Croatia temporary residence permit acquired abroad, can register within 72 hours. However, EU/EEA citizens do not have to go through this process of local police registration unless they are planning to stay in Croatia for longer than 90 days.

Croatia Residence Permit: Entry Requirements

As stated in the legislation of the Republic of Croatia, you can obtain a Croatia temporary residence permit for the following purposes:

  • Family reunification
  • Work purposes; upon getting a valid work permit from an authorized employer in Croatia accompanied by a contract of employment.
  • Study
  • Scientific research
  • Humanitarian reasons

A temporary residence permit is valid for one year. The duration of the Croatia residence permit can be extended only if the applicant’s passport remains valid for at least three months after the expiry of the extended temporary residence permit. You need to apply for the extension of the temporary residence permit for Croatia 30 days before the expiration of the visa.

The following documents must be attached with the application:

  • A proof supporting your purpose for requiring a Temporary Residence in Croatia.
  • A valid passport with a validity for at least another three months from the date of application for a residence permit.
  • Two passport size photographs.
  • A certificate confirming that the applicant has no criminal convictions.
  • Documents supporting health insurance.
  • Proof of accommodation in Croatia.
  • Proof of funds.

Who can Apply for a Residence Permit for Croatia?

The first application for a residence permit must be made at the Croatian consulate of the applicant’s country of residence. Along with it, proof of funds and proof of accommodation need to be submitted. There are certain grounds on which a candidate can apply for a residence permit for Croatia:

1. Temporary residence for Croatia on the grounds of family reunification

A foreign national whose family member is a citizen of Croatia or permanent resident or temporary resident can apply for temporary residence for Croatia. Family members such as children under 18, spouses, parents, brothers and sisters of the applicants. Following four years of temporary residence based on family reunification, if they are over 18, the applicant can apply for a separate temporary residence permit for Croatia, who meet the general immigration requirements and have health insurance. A child born on Croatia's territory to foreign citizens has the right to stay for one month without the need for a temporary residence permit.

2. Temporary residence on the grounds of employment or entrepreneurial activity

To obtain a Croatia residence permit based on employment, the candidate must acquire a work contract with an authorized Croatian company. The duration of this visa is no longer than one year. International workers quotas are set annually (about 2,000 jobs). The key criteria for the temporary residence of entrepreneurs is a company permit, which is issued to those who are having at least 51% of shares in a Croatian based organization. An individual holding a senior position in a Croatian company is also eligible to apply for Croatia temporary residence permit.

3. Temporary residence on the grounds of studies or scientific activity

The applicant must have been admitted into a Croatian educational institution to get a temporary residence permit on the grounds of study. Guardians of underage students can also apply for the same.

In Croatia, temporary residence entitles its holder to apply for permanent residence in the country. The latter confers the same rights to foreign citizens as Croatian nationals, except for the right to vote and be elected. Croatian residence permits gained popularity especially after the country joined the EU as their citizens are now entitled to live and work in any EU country. Temporary residency is provided for one year, with the possibility that Croatian police may extend it. That must be done 30 days before the expiry of the new residence permit.
