Canada Finally Answers Call for Improvements in Labour Market Impact Assessment; Makes it Possible for Employers to Operate Online

Canada's one more step towards modernizing the process of employing temporary foreign workers

Employers who are willing to employ temporary foreign workers can now access their application for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) through an online system. The new settlement implemented after several calls from the Canadian business class to modify the present LMIA process for the convenience of employers.

According to the Canadian Government Official statement, the new online initiative of LMIA will permit the employers to register their Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) application online allowing them to conduct their transactions, manage their accounts and correspond with service Canada.

Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA): What's It About?

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) can be classified as a report needed by a Canadian employer to initiate the hiring process of a temporary foreign worker. Positive LMIA indicates that a foreign worker is needed to fill the job. It will also prove that there was no permanent resident or Canadian worker available to do the job. It may also be termed a letter of confirmation. Once an employer acquires the positive LMIA, the foreigner worker is eligible to apply for a Canada work permit.

New Improvements Enables Tracking of LMIA Progress

The employers can access the online portal using the same credentials used for Job Bank. The system will include an electronic questionnaire, which will direct the user towards completion of the LMIA application while monitoring its progress. Also, the users can anytime review their application, upload documents and view Service Canadian commitment letters.

The Canadian business community has been demanding for years that red tape and processing times be reduced around hiring temporary foreign workers. Numerous recommendations for improvement have been put forward by various business development groups in Canada, such as the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Earlier, employers were unable to monitor the progress of their LMIA application. It was almost impossible to determine the cause of rejection as most of the employers found it difficult to get answers to their questions.
